The local islanders consider the ocean side as the front of the home. We addressed this “front” with porches, decks, and large overhangs that buffer the heat gain and glare from the sun and sea. The second floor porches were broken into smaller elements and detailed to provide interest and imagination and to reduce the scale.
Large double hung windows upgraded with high impact glass, wide porches and shutters help to create a home reminiscent of an earlier period on the island.
Detailing of the ceiling in this suite includes a wood barrel vault on the main axis, leading the view past the restful porches and to the ocean beyond.
The dome ceiling in this master bathroom features a small chandelier, neutral colors with direct access to the porch and the Atlantic Ocean in the distance. Located on Sullivan's Island, this master bathroom has a separate water closet, double vanity, large enclosed shower and whirlpool tub.
The second floor focuses on the bedroom suites for family and guests. The Master Suite spans the entire width of the south façade, and commands a spectacular ocean view.
The interior layout of this beachfront home was intended to be reminiscent of an older, rambling beach cottage, while incorporating the modern conveniences and style considerations of the owner. Arrival at the great room, which accommodates the kitchen, wet bar, living and dining areas, presents a full view of the serene beach and ocean landscape.
The walk from the entry foyer to the ocean-facing great room offers glimpses of the Atlantic ocean through carefully articulated rooms and window placement.
The entry of this Sullivan's Island home was intentionally placed off of the main axis, creating a starting point for the revealing path to the main living area.

This beach home is located on a barrier island overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Sited among older summer beach cottages, this home is proportioned to be a gentle neighbor, while still providing gracious accommodations for extended multi-family reunions; an important owner demand. Our design program incorporated the owner’s wish list with several additional concerns, specifically zoning changes in allowable mass and size, sensitivity to the coastal environment, as well as community apprehension over the scale of new homes in the area.
