The design program for this house was to create a home with the heart of an old-fashioned 1930’s cottage but make it fully functional with advanced facilities and services characteristic of a contemporary lifestyle.
An ocean and Charleston harbor view create a dramatic backdrop while the Western sunset presents an opportunity to capture the breathtaking twilight at each day’s-end.
The interiors of this home were intended to be ageless and suggestive of a rambling beach cottage.
Wide overhangs protect the facade from sun and driving rain on the home and on each level of the porch, allowing the owners to sit and enjoy a summer rain squall.
Simple, sustainable finishes allow the home to be enjoyed as it stands open to the salt air during seasonally mild weather.
The entry side of this property narrows as it approaches the road and the neighboring homes in the community.

The home is located on Sullivan's Island and overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and busy city harbor. The classic depiction of an “old beach house,” this home is generously proportioned to accommodate extended multi-family reunions, an important owner demand. Design criteria was based upon additional concerns such as changes in zoning in home mass and size, community apprehension over the scale of homes, as well as sensitivity to the coastal environment.
