This is a classic beachfront cottage built in the 1920’s. We were asked to make the house livable and comfortable as a full time residence for a family with children that also like to entertain. Our goal was to expand the house without losing its unique character and charm.
Originally beachfront property, this house was sited comfortably within the boundaries of a 1/2-acre lot. The program called for unobstructed views from the kitchen into both the front yard and rear court yard areas.
Virtually all of the living areas in this residence were separated from the exterior with wide low porches creating dark spaces with low horizontal light.
The program required that we create very livable, open and flowing spaces using simple architectural features for a family that likes to entertain.
The home was a classic beach cottage with later additions of an outbuilding to the rear connected by a screened porch. This outbuilding contained the kitchen and a bedroom, all accessed from an existing side porch.
Original windows contained water glass and the glass was reused in the kitchen cabinets.
We raised the existing porches and extended them to wrap around the corner.
Site constraints required that we add three bedrooms in a second floor of this one story cottage. We set the second floor inside a gabled and dormered roof-line to avoid altering the character of the cottage or its relationship to the ground.

Originally a one-story beach cottage, this Sullivan's Island home has undergone a major renovation without losing any of its history or charm. The creative re-use of existing materials helped maintain the historic character of the home's interiors. The addition of a second floor was kept completely within a dormered roofline to maintain the scale and character while meeting the modern needs of a family of four.
